Where it came from
Arrogant Wurm was released in the Torment expansion for Magic: The Gathering in February 2002. As a core component of the set's graveyard-focused mechanics, the card features the 'madness' keyword, which allows players to cast it at a reduced cost when discarded. This design was part of Wizards of the Coast's exploration of black and green color identities, aiming to create synergies between hand management and board presence.
The card's iconic illustration was provided by artist Kev Walker, who was a prolific contributor to the game during this era. Walker chose a visceral, aggressive aesthetic for the Wurm, emphasizing its size and predatory nature to match its mechanical efficiency. The card became a staple in competitive formats of the time, particularly in aggressive green-black decks, and is remembered for its effectiveness in tempo-based play.
