Provenance

Where it came from

Hypnox was introduced in the Torment expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in early 2002. This set was unique for its heavy emphasis on black mana, designed by Wizards of the Coast to shift the game's mechanical balance during the Odyssey block. The card's design features a nightmarish, ethereal creature intended to represent the concept of psychic imprisonment, fitting the set's themes of psychological trauma and torment.

The artwork was commissioned from Greg Staples, a prominent fantasy illustrator known for his atmospheric and moody style. Staples leaned into the surrealist aesthetic of the Torment set, utilizing deep shadows and haunting, spectral imagery to capture the creature's ability to exile an opponent's entire hand. The card remains a niche piece of early 2000s design, remembered by players for its high mana cost and its distinct, evocative visual presence.
