Where it came from
Ashnod's Altar was originally released in the 1994 Antiquities expansion, an early Magic: The Gathering set focused on the lore of the Artificer Ashnod and her conflict with Mishra. It was designed as a powerful mana-acceleration tool, representing the ruthless efficiency of the Brothers' War era where life force was frequently sacrificed to fuel mechanical advancement.
The version from The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts set features a stylized, schematic-inspired design that evokes the feel of a historical blueprint. While the card's illustration and frame were updated to fit the aesthetic of this special subset, the core gameplay function remains unchanged from its inception, continuing to be a cornerstone of artifact-based combo decks due to its ability to turn creatures into colorless mana.
