Where it came from
Ashnod's Altar first appeared in the 1994 Antiquities expansion for Magic: The Gathering, serving as a pivotal piece in the game's lore centered on the conflict between brothers Urza and Mishra. Ashnod, a ruthless artificer serving Mishra, designed the device to sacrifice living beings for mana, reflecting the brutal and mechanical nature of the Brothers' War. The card has since become an iconic staple in Commander and other eternal formats due to its unique ability to convert creatures into resources.
The 2022 Brothers' War Retro Artifacts version, collector number 67z, reimagines this classic card with a distinct aesthetic treatment designed to evoke the original 1990s card frame. This specific printing was crafted to celebrate the game's deep history, utilizing an ornate, schematic-style art direction that highlights the dark, experimental essence of Ashnod's inventions. It was received by the player base as a nostalgic tribute that remains functionally identical to the original while providing a modernized, cohesive look within the Retro Artifacts subset.
