Where it came from
Assault // Battery was originally printed in the 2002 Magic: The Gathering set Invasion. The card utilizes the split card mechanic, an innovative design choice introduced in the Invasion block that allows players to choose one of two distinct spells on a single card, offering increased tactical flexibility during gameplay. This specific iteration is the Timeshifted version from the 2006 set Time Spiral, which featured iconic cards from the game's history reprinted with the original card frame.
The card was designed to offer players a versatile tool, providing both a direct damage option with Assault and a creature-generating spell with Battery. The artwork for the original Invasion printing was created by artist Christopher Moeller, who captured the aggressive and functional nature of the spells through his distinct, atmospheric style. Upon its release, the split card mechanic was widely praised by the community for its depth and remains a staple of Magic's design philosophy.
