Where it came from
Assquatch was released in 2004 as part of the Unhinged expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed by Wizards of the Coast as a silver-bordered, non-tournament-legal collection that prioritized humor, absurdity, and mechanics that pushed the boundaries of traditional card game rules.
The card was illustrated by Matt Cavotta, who utilized a whimsical, cartoonish style to depict the creature. The design serves as a play on the legendary cryptid Bigfoot, incorporating the wordplay characteristic of the set's creative direction. It was received by the player base as a quintessential example of the irreverent spirit that defined the Unhinged release.
