Where it came from
Atog was originally featured in the 1994 Magic: The Gathering set known to collectors as Summer Magic, or Edgar. This set was intended to be a corrected reprint of the Revised Edition, designed to fix various errors and color inconsistencies from the previous run. However, due to a series of production mishaps and an unintended printing error that led to a limited distribution, the set was never officially released to the public through standard retail channels.
The artwork for the card was provided by Jesper Myrfors, who served as the game’s original art director. Myrfors brought a distinct, painterly aesthetic to the early years of the game, and his illustration of the Atog captures the creature's quirky, gluttonous nature through a stylized, somewhat grotesque lens. Because of the limited survival rate of the Summer Magic run, these cards are held in high regard by enthusiasts of early trading card history.
