Plains

The Summer Magic set, colloquially known as Edgar, was produced in 1994 as a corrective print run intended to replace the 1994 Revised Edition, which had been plagued by significant coloring errors and printing inconsistencies. Wizards of the Coast contracted an outside firm to manage this run, but the result was marred by its own set of unique technical flaws, including copyright date misprints and vibrant, saturated ink hues that differed markedly from other sets of the era. Because the company deemed the quality insufficient, the vast majority of the inventory was destroyed, leaving only a small, accidental surplus to enter general circulation.

The art for this particular Plains card reflects the quintessential aesthetic of early Magic: The Gathering, relying on the original illustration commissioned for the Alpha and Beta core sets. The design was meant to evoke a sense of high-fantasy minimalism, providing players with functional, atmospheric land cards that established the game's visual identity. While it was initially dismissed as a defective product, the scarcity caused by the massive inventory purge transformed the set into one of the most sought-after rarities in trading card history, with collectors today valuing these cards for their unique saturated color profile and the historical narrative of their near-total destruction.
