Provenance

Where it came from

Austere Command was originally released in the 2008 Lorwyn expansion, designed as a modal sorcery that offers players versatility by choosing two from four possible effects. The card was reimagined for the 2022 New Capenna Commander set, which explored the Art Deco-inspired, 1920s-style metropolis of New Capenna. This version features new artwork that aligns with the set's aesthetic of organized crime families and opulent urban decay.

The New Capenna Commander iteration of this card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan. The design seeks to bridge the utility of a classic board wipe with the thematic flair of the plane, depicting the rigid, sweeping authority associated with the card's function within the organized chaos of the setting. It remains a staple in Commander formats for its ability to clear various permanent types depending on the board state.
