Where it came from
Avacyn and Griselbrand (RZ08a) is a double-faced promotional card released as part of the 'Mystery Booster' convention edition in 2019. It was designed to showcase the thematic duality between the iconic archangel Avacyn and the demonic entity Griselbrand, central figures in the lore of the Magic: The Gathering plane of Innistrad. The card features art that emphasizes this juxtaposition, reflecting the gothic horror aesthetic that defines the set.
The card was conceived as a non-tournament-legal novelty, intended to delight long-term fans and convention-goers. Its design was overseen by Wizards of the Coast as part of a series of 'playtest' cards, which used unique templates and mechanics to create a nostalgic or experimental experience. It was well-received by the player base for its distinctive visual style and its role as a creative bridge between two of the game's most significant antagonistic archetypes.
