Avalanche Riders

Avalanche Riders was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Legacy expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set followed the narrative arc of the Urza block, which explored the high-fantasy industrial conflict between the artificer Urza and the mechanical menace of the Phyrexians. This specific card was designed to function as an aggressive utility creature, reflecting the set's mechanical emphasis on land destruction and tempo-based strategies.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Daren Bader, who contributed extensively to the visual identity of the game during the late 1990s. Bader utilized a painterly, atmospheric style to capture the card's essence—a mounted soldier navigating an icy, treacherous landscape. Upon release, the card became a notable staple in competitive play, particularly within the Red Deck Wins archetype, due to its efficient ability to disrupt an opponent's resource base while simultaneously applying pressure on the battlefield.
