Provenance

Where it came from

Avarax was originally printed in the 2002 Judgement expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Wizards of the Coast to emphasize the red color's aggressive, discard-oriented mechanics. The card features an ability that allows a player to search their library for other copies of the card, a design choice meant to reward players for building redundant, creature-heavy decks that could maintain momentum in the mid-game.

The version from Eternal Masters, released in 2016, features artwork by Greg Staples. This set was curated specifically to reprint high-value and historically significant cards for the Legacy format, and the inclusion of Avarax served as a functional piece for limited environments rather than a centerpiece for competitive constructed play. Staples’ rendition maintains the creature's menacing, draconic aesthetic, aligning with the dramatic fantasy style favored by the franchise during that era.
