Where it came from
Awaken the Erstwhile was released in early 2019 as part of the Ravnica Allegiance expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to fit within the set's thematic focus on the Golgari Swarm, a guild defined by themes of decay, death, and the cycle of life. It serves as a narrative representation of the guild's necromantic influence, allowing players to manipulate the battlefield by forcing opponents to discard their hands in exchange for zombie tokens.
The artwork was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, whose work often appears in the game. Velinov aimed to capture the visceral and somewhat grotesque nature of the Golgari aesthetic, focusing on the literal awakening of the 'erstwhile' or the long-dead. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its high mana cost and chaotic effect, which solidified its role as a niche, thematic inclusion in commander decks rather than a staple in highly competitive tournament formats.
