Where it came from
Awaken the Woods was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering expansion set that revisited the iconic conflict between Urza and Mishra. The card depicts a forest coming to life to combat the mechanization represented by the set's central storyline. It functions as a sorcery that creates X Forest Dryad creature tokens, embodying the set's themes of nature’s desperate response to the industrial warfare that defines the lore of Dominaria.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Livia Prima, who utilized an ethereal, verdant aesthetic to distinguish the organic dryads from the harsh, metallic artifacts prominent throughout the set. By assigning the tokens the Forest land type, the design emphasizes the connection between the land and the creatures inhabiting it. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its scalability in Commander and other casual formats, where it serves as both a ramp tool and a wide-board state generator.
