Where it came from
Awaken the Woods was released in 2021 as part of the Mystical Archive, a curated collection of powerful instants and sorceries featured within the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card itself was originally printed in the Commander 2019 set, but this specific version was reimagined with a distinct, Japanese-inspired aesthetic to reflect the magical academic theme of the Strixhaven plane.
The art for this printing was created by artist Alix Branwyn, who utilized a stylized, elegant approach consistent with the 'Strixhaven Mystical Archive' art direction. By integrating traditional artistic motifs with the high-fantasy nature of the game, the design was intended to evoke the feeling of an ancient, enchanted scroll. The Mystical Archive cards were widely praised by the community for their diverse artistic interpretations and their role in highlighting classic game mechanics within a sophisticated, library-themed visual framework.
