Awakener Druid

Awakener Druid was released in the Magic 2010 core set, a pivotal release for Wizards of the Coast that sought to modernize the game's identity by introducing planeswalker cards to the core set and shifting away from the traditional, cyclical nature of previous base sets. Released in July 2009, this card was designed to highlight the game's focus on creature-based combat and the fundamental mechanical interaction between lands and green mana, serving as a straightforward yet impactful utility piece in limited formats of that era.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Dan Dos Santos, who captured the druid's connection to nature through a vibrant, high-fantasy aesthetic. His depiction emphasizes the synergy between the caster and the land itself, aiming for a visual style that felt both timeless and accessible to new players joining the game during the revitalization of the core set. The design was received as a functional, archetypal green card that effectively showcased the potential of creature-land transformations without overly complicating the game state.
