Where it came from
Awakening was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to emphasize creature-focused gameplay and tactical combat, moving away from the combo-heavy dominance of previous expansions. The card itself represents a rare enchantment that allows players to untap all lands during each player's upkeep, a mechanic that encourages a more active and resource-rich style of play.
The artwork for Awakening was created by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic illustrators in the early years of the game. Rush utilized a vibrant, fantasy-focused aesthetic to depict the moment of magical resurgence described by the card's text. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility piece, valued by players who favored green-aligned ramp strategies that benefited from having additional mana available outside of their own turn.
