Where it came from
Awakening of Vitu-Ghazi was released as a rare promo card within the War of the Spark expansion for Magic: The Gathering, which debuted in 2019. This card served as a thematic centerpiece for the Selesnya Conclave, representing the awakening of the massive sentient tree-city that defines the guild's presence on the plane of Ravnica. The design was intended to capture the lore-heavy narrative of the Nicol Bolas conflict, where the city itself rose up as an organic defender against the invading army.
The artwork was illustrated by Daarken, a frequent contributor to the Magic: The Gathering universe. The piece was crafted to emphasize the sheer scale and mystical grandeur of Vitu-Ghazi, utilizing a sweeping perspective that juxtaposes the organic foliage against the structured architecture of Ravnica. Upon release, the promo version was received well by collectors for its distinct foil treatment and its specific ties to the set's pivotal storytelling moments.
