Where it came from
Awakening of Vitu-Ghazi was released in 2019 as part of the War of the Spark expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set depicts the climactic battle for Ravnica, a plane-spanning city-world, where the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas attempts to harvest the souls of the populace. This card represents the Selesnya Conclave’s desperate effort to awaken the sentient world-tree, Vitu-Ghazi, to defend their home against the invading Eternal army.
The artwork was commissioned from Jaime Jones, who sought to capture the immense, organic scale of the city-tree rising from the urban sprawl. Jones focused on the contrast between the rigid, manufactured stone of the city and the erupting, ancient vitality of the world-tree. Within the game's competitive landscape, the card was noted for its ability to generate significant board presence by creating an Elemental token equal to the number of lands controlled, providing a unique stabilizing tool for green-based strategies.
