Where it came from
AWOL was released in 2020 as part of the Unsanctioned set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed as a boxed product meant to provide a self-contained, draftable experience for players, blending silver-bordered, 'un-set' mechanics with traditional gameplay. The card is intentionally humorous, playing on the tropes of creature removal by physically requiring the player to remove the card from the game and hide it in an area outside the play space.
The card was illustrated by Mike Burns, who has contributed numerous pieces of art to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. The design focus was on comedic utility, prioritizing the absurdity of the card's function over competitive viability. Within the casual play environments for which Unsanctioned was designed, the card was received as a lighthearted disruption to the standard rules of interaction, reinforcing the set's goal of prioritizing fun and social engagement over strictly balanced gameplay.
