Provenance

Where it came from

The Island card from the Unsanctioned set was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2020 as part of a standalone 'un-set' experience. Designed as a boxed product meant for casual play, Unsanctioned allowed players to mix and match five mono-colored decks. The art direction for this specific Island was led by the internal creative team to maintain the whimsical and experimental aesthetic that characterizes the silver-bordered sets, prioritizing a departure from traditional Magic: The Gathering card templates.

This particular card features a full-art treatment, a stylistic choice intended to emphasize the landscape illustration over the frame. By stripping away standard text boxes and borders, the designers aimed to provide a more immersive visual experience for collectors. The set was received as a lighthearted expansion that prioritized art quality and collector appeal, cementing the Unsanctioned basic lands as sought-after staples for players who value aesthetic uniformity in their decks.
