Where it came from
Azlask, the Swelling Scourge is part of the Art Series included in the Modern Horizons 3 expansion released by Wizards of the Coast in 2024. This specific card represents an oversized, frame-less showcase of the artwork featured on the corresponding legendary creature card from the main set. The Art Series was introduced to highlight the detailed illustrations commissioned for the game, offering fans a high-quality look at the creative direction behind the set's Eldrazi-themed narrative.
The illustration for Azlask was produced by artist Campbell White. The design emphasizes the grotesque, shifting anatomy characteristic of the Eldrazi, capturing the cosmic horror aesthetic that defines this faction within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The piece was well-received by players for its dynamic use of color and texture, successfully conveying the overwhelming, parasitic nature of the Swelling Scourge as it appears in the Modern Horizons 3 storyline.
