Grist, the Plague Swarm // Grist, the Plague Swarm

Grist, the Plague Swarm was originally introduced in the Modern Horizons 2 set, representing a unique design space where the card functions as both a creature and a planeswalker regardless of its current zone. The Art Series version from Modern Horizons 3 serves as a commemorative tribute, featuring high-quality, borderless foil-etched or standard reproductions of the original character concept. These cards are distributed as part of a curated subset within the Modern Horizons 3 product line, intended to highlight the intricate detail of the game's creature designs for collectors and art enthusiasts.

The character of Grist was envisioned by the Wizards of the Coast design team as a hive-mind entity composed of countless insects, moving away from traditional humanoid planeswalker tropes. The illustration captures this eerie, swarming aesthetic with meticulous attention to the individual chitinous textures and the unified silhouette of the insectoid mass. The design was received with significant interest by the Magic: The Gathering community, particularly for its innovative mechanical identity and its unsettling, atmospheric visual storytelling.
