Azor's Gateway // Sanctum of the Sun

Azor's Gateway was released in the 2018 expansion Rivals of Ixalan, set within the plane of Ixalan, a world defined by its Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetics and warring factions. Designed by the Magic: The Gathering development team, this artifact was intended to represent a legendary portal used by the sphinx planeswalker Azor to reach the Sanctum of the Sun, serving as a high-risk, high-reward engine for players to generate massive amounts of mana. Its inclusion in 'The List'—a curated selection of reprints appearing in Set Boosters—highlights its enduring interest as a unique transformation card that rewards resource management.

The card’s visual narrative was brought to life by artist Svetlin Velinov, who captured the architectural grandeur and mystical resonance of the gateway itself. The design intentionally evokes a sense of ancient, forgotten power, utilizing the double-faced card mechanic to physically depict the transition from the gate’s activation to the manifestation of the Sanctum of the Sun. It has been well-regarded by collectors for its flavorful execution of the 'quest' archetype, providing a distinct mechanical challenge that remains a staple of casual and Commander gameplay.
