Where it came from
Azor's Gateway was introduced in the 2018 expansion Rivals of Ixalan, serving as a rare artifact that represents the mystical threshold of the Sun Empire. The card was designed as a transformative dual-faced card, a mechanic that requires the player to exile specific cards to eventually flip it into the powerful Sanctum of the Sun. This design reflects the set's exploration themes, where players navigate the perils of the plane of Ixalan to unlock ancient, divine resources.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Cliff Childs, who aimed to capture the monumental and slightly intimidating scale of a celestial gateway. Within the competitive landscape of Magic: The Gathering, the card garnered attention for its unique win condition, which forces players to balance risk and resource management. It remains a notable piece for collectors interested in the mechanical evolution of transform cards during the late 2010s.
