Where it came from
Azor's Gateway was released in 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the legendary site where the sphinx planeswalker Azor retreated to construct the Immortal Sun, a central artifact in the set's narrative revolving around the search for Orazca. Its design, featuring a double-faced transformation mechanic, reflects the theme of discovery and accumulation, tasking the player with filtering cards to ultimately unlock the powerful Sanctum of the Sun.
The card was illustrated by Cliff Childs, who aimed to evoke a sense of ancient, high-fantasy architecture through the gate's shifting geometry. Upon release, the design was noted for its unique utility in control-oriented decks that sought to leverage the card's ability to normalize hand size while building toward the massive mana advantage provided by its reverse side. It remains a popular inclusion among players interested in artifact-heavy strategies and historical lore within the Ixalan block.
