Provenance

Where it came from

The Badlands card was released as part of the International Collectors' Edition (ICE) in 1993. This set was designed to introduce international players to the core mechanics of the Magic: The Gathering base game. Unlike the standard sets available in domestic markets, the ICE cards feature a distinct gold-bordered back, which was intended to clearly distinguish them from tournament-legal cards and prevent them from being used in competitive sanctioned events.

The art for Badlands was created by Rob Alexander, a prominent illustrator who defined much of the early aesthetic of the game's landscape cards. His work on this piece emphasizes the rugged, desolate terrain of a volcanic wasteland, using a muted color palette to convey the harshness of the environment. While the set itself was initially produced in limited quantities for specific overseas markets, it remains a recognized artifact of the game's early expansion period, valued today primarily for its classic visual design.
