Badlands

Badlands was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural set of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game created by Richard Garfield. Produced by Wizards of the Coast, the card is classified as a dual land, a foundational mechanic designed to provide players with flexible mana resources by tapping for either black or red mana. This card, along with the rest of the original dual lands, represents the early experimental phase of the game where resource management mechanics were being refined for competitive play.

The artwork for the original Alpha printing was created by artist Christopher Rush, who contributed significantly to the visual identity of early Magic: The Gathering. His depiction of the Badlands sought to evoke a desolate, scorched landscape, mirroring the harsh mechanical nature of combining two opposing color philosophies. While early reception focused primarily on the utility of the card within the game’s growing tournament scene, the aesthetic of the dual lands became iconic for defining the dark, high-fantasy tone established in the early 1990s.
