Badlands

The Badlands card is a cornerstone of the Magic: The Gathering 'dual land' cycle, originally debuting in the 1993 Alpha set. This particular iteration, known as Summer Magic or 'Edgar,' stems from a rare 1994 promotional print run produced by Cartamundi. It was intended to replace the Revised Edition but was largely destroyed due to extensive printing errors, making the few surviving copies highly sought after by collectors for their scarcity and unique color saturation compared to standard printings.

The artwork for Badlands was created by Rob Alexander, a prolific landscape illustrator for the game whose atmospheric style defined the visual identity of the mana-producing lands. His design aimed to evoke a desolate, scorched environment that felt both menacing and functional within the game's mechanics. The card was received as a quintessential piece of Magic's early history, serving as a rare artifact that represents the turbulent production standards of the game's formative years.
