Where it came from
Bag Check was released in 2022 as part of Unfinity, the fourth Un-set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to explore the intersection of science fiction aesthetics and the game's established humor-based mechanics, marking a shift where some cards were deemed legal for tournament play for the first time in the series' history. The card itself serves as a meta-commentary on the convention experience, reflecting the humor inherent in the set's carnival-themed universe.
The art was illustrated by Joshua Raphael, who employed a clean, vibrant digital style to capture the mundane yet chaotic nature of event security. Raphael’s composition highlights the literal interpretation of the card's name, depicting a scene that balances the game's science-fiction carnival atmosphere with a familiar, relatable frustration. Upon release, the set received mixed but generally appreciative feedback from the player base, who valued the blend of whimsical top-down design and the inclusion of high-quality foil treatments.
