Where it came from
The Squirrel Stack card was released as part of the Unfinity set in 2022, a thematic expansion for Magic: The Gathering designed to blend science fiction aesthetics with the franchise's traditional humorous, non-legal 'Un-set' style. Released by Wizards of the Coast, this card reflects the game's long-standing affection for squirrels, a creature type that has evolved from a minor mechanical joke into a recurring and beloved staple of the game's lore and card design.
The artwork for this specific card was commissioned from artist Justine Mara Andersen, who utilized the set's retro-futuristic carnival aesthetic to depict a precarious and whimsical pile of squirrels. The design intent was to capture the chaotic energy inherent to 'Un-set' cards, which prioritize unconventional mechanics and visual humor over the rigid balance required for standard competitive play, ultimately resulting in a piece that remains a favorite among collectors who enjoy the game's more lighthearted output.
