Where it came from
Baird, Argivian Recruiter was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card depicts a key figure from the fictional nation of Benalia, serving as a tactical leader during the Phyrexian invasion of the plane. This iteration of the character highlights the military organization of the Argivian forces as they attempt to repel the interplanar threat, grounding the card within the set's broader narrative of resistance and reclamation.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Antonio José Manzanedo. Known for his painterly style in the fantasy genre, Manzanedo focused on capturing a sense of disciplined leadership, portraying Baird in mid-command to reflect his mechanical ability to rally tokens and creatures. The design was received as a functional, mid-range utility card for limited formats, praised for its thematic cohesion with the White-aligned aggressive strategies prevalent in Dominaria United.
