Where it came from
Astor, Bearer of Blades was released in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set Dominaria United. The card depicts a legendary Kithkin knight, specifically designed to support Equipment and Vehicle-themed decks by reducing their casting costs and allowing players to filter through their libraries for specific artifacts. This card fits into the broader narrative of Dominaria, a plane returning to its roots as it faces a massive Phyrexian invasion, serving as a tactical leader for the plane's defensive forces.
The artwork for Astor was illustrated by Greg Staples, an artist long associated with the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. Staples focused on conveying a sense of veteran authority, emphasizing the character's intricate armor and the weight of the blades he carries. Upon release, the card was received as a niche but effective utility piece for Commander players, valued primarily for the versatility he offers in builds that focus on artifact synergy and equipment-based strategies.
