What it does
First strike, menace
Whenever you cast your first instant or sorcery spell each turn, you may cast a spell with lesser mana value that shares a card type with it from your hand without paying its mana cost. If you don't, create First Mate Ragavan, a legendary 2/1 red Monkey Pirate creature token. It gains haste until end of turn.

Where it came from
Baral and Kari Zev is a legendary creature card released in the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander set, designed as a collaborative reimagining of two prominent characters from the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The card features Baral, Chief of Compliance from the Kaladesh plane, paired with the chaotic pilot Kari Zev. This pairing reflects a narrative effort to blend contrasting personality types—a rigid, authoritative law-mage and a free-spirited rebel—onto a single mechanical chassis designed for Commander play.
The card’s design, illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, emphasizes the juxtaposition of these two characters through a dynamic and cluttered composition. Villeneuve aimed to capture the tension between Baral’s focus on control and Kari Zev’s reliance on her monkey companion, Ragavan. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful exploration of unconventional alliances, finding a niche among players who enjoy spellslinging strategies that emphasize token creation and spell-casting synergy.
