Where it came from
Baral, Chief of Compliance was originally printed in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Aether Revolt. The character was designed to represent the oppressive bureaucratic oversight of the Consulate on the plane of Kaladesh, serving as a primary antagonist to the Planeswalker Chandra Nalaar. Mechanically, the card was built to reward spell-heavy, control-oriented strategies by reducing the casting cost of instant and sorcery spells while punishing opponents for attempting to counter them.
The Multiverse Legends version, numbered 138, was released in the 2023 set March of the Machine. This printing features a unique aesthetic treatment that draws upon the visual motifs of Kaladesh, utilizing intricate, filigree-laden art styles typical of that world's technology. It was received by the player community as a staple of the Commander format, favored by those who enjoy reactive gameplay and resource management.
