Where it came from
Baral, Chief of Compliance was originally introduced in the Aether Revolt set as a pivotal antagonist in the Kaladesh block, representing the oppressive bureaucratic force of the Consulate. The character was designed to emphasize blue-aligned control mechanics, specifically rewarding players for countering spells and interacting with the stack. This particular version, featuring the distinct visual style of the Multiverse Legends bonus sheet, was released in the March of the Machine set to celebrate the expansive history of Magic: The Gathering characters across the multiverse.
The Multiverse Legends treatment reimagines established legendary creatures with art and borders specific to their plane of origin, aiming to provide a cohesive aesthetic for legendary characters gathered from various timelines. For this card, the design team opted for a stylistic departure from the original art to better capture the cold, calculating nature of Baral’s role as the head of the Consulate's mages. The card was well-received by players for its utility in Commander formats and its refreshed visual presentation that honors the character’s origins in the lore of Kaladesh.
