Where it came from
Baral, Chief of Compliance was originally printed in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Aether Revolt. The character serves as a central antagonist in the Kaladesh storyline, representing the oppressive bureaucratic authority of the Consulate. This specific version, appearing as card number 1447, was released as part of a Secret Lair drop series, a specialty line of premium cards featuring alternate art and curated themes designed to appeal to both players and collectors.
The illustration for this iteration was created by artist Kevin Tong. Moving away from the character's original aesthetic, this design leans into a sleek, stylized approach that emphasizes Baral's role as a cold, calculating architect of the Consulate's laws. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Magic community for its departure from standard set art styles, highlighting the series' focus on providing unique, expressive interpretations of established legendary creatures.
