Where it came from
Barbed Foliage was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As one of the first sets designed with a cohesive geographical theme, Mirage drew inspiration from African landscapes and folklore to move away from the traditional high-fantasy tropes of earlier expansions. The card was intended to provide a functional green enchantment that could penalize creatures, reflecting the hostile and overgrown nature of the set's fictional setting, Zhalfir.
