Wave Elemental

Wave Elemental was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third expansion set, Mirage was notable for being the first to be designed as a standalone draftable environment, shifting the game's strategy toward a more cohesive limited play experience. The set drew significant artistic inspiration from African mythology and landscapes, moving away from the high-fantasy tropes that dominated the earlier expansions.

The card was illustrated by Kaja Foglio, a frequent contributor to the game during its early years. Her design captures the fluid, ethereal nature of the creature, aligning with the set's broader thematic exploration of elemental forces. While the card is often remembered for its mechanical role in blue-aligned deck archetypes of the era, it remains a nostalgic piece for those who appreciate the distinctive, painterly aesthetic that defined the mid-nineties aesthetic of the game.
