Barter in Blood

Barter in Blood is a classic Magic: The Gathering card that first appeared in the Mirrodin expansion in 2003 before being reprinted in the Commander 2015 set with updated artwork. It was designed as a powerful board control tool in black, forcing each player to sacrifice two creatures to represent the grim, utilitarian nature of the color's philosophy. The mechanic reflects the ruthless exchange of resources, a core thematic element of black-aligned decks in the game.

The Commander 2015 version features striking illustration by Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature ethereal and moody style to depict the heavy cost of the spell. By centering the visual focus on the visceral trade-off between life and death, Voss successfully conveyed the card's function as a mass removal effect. Upon its release in the Plunder the Graves deck, it was well-received by players for its ability to clear the board of resilient threats while fitting perfectly into graveyard-centric strategies.
