Where it came from
Basic Conjuration was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as an uncommon green sorcery, it allows players to search their library for a creature card and reveal it, reflecting the academic theme of the set, which focuses on a magical university setting. This specific version is a promotional variant, distributed through various Organized Play initiatives and store events to encourage community participation during the set's release window.
The card’s aesthetic and illustrative direction were crafted to fit the aesthetic of Prismari and Witherbloom, the colleges of Strixhaven. Like many cards in this series, the illustration emphasizes the tactile nature of magical study. The card was generally well-received by players for its utility in deck consistency, providing a reliable way to tutor for creatures, which is a staple mechanic within the green color identity of the game.
