Where it came from
Basic Conjuration was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages promotional set, specifically designed as a participation reward for the Strixhaven Prerelease events. The card draws its thematic inspiration from the central setting of the expansion, a prestigious university for mages, focusing on the green-aligned Prismari or Quandrix schools of magic. Mechanically, it functions as a search-based utility card, allowing players to pull creatures from their library into their hand.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a lush, verdant aesthetic to reflect the botanical and natural magic characteristic of the set. Voss’s design process emphasized a balance between the academic atmosphere of the institution and the wild, untamed nature of creature-based sorcery. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats and its contribution to the overall world-building of the Strixhaven campus.
