Where it came from
Basic Conjuration was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set is themed around a magical university, and this specific card represents the foundational nature of summoning spells within the curriculum of the Prismari and Quandrix colleges.
The card features illustration by Johann Bodin, who worked to capture the essence of a student initiating a conjuration ritual. The design centers on the visual manifestation of magical energy, aligning with the set's academic aesthetic and the mechanical goal of providing players with a straightforward way to search their library for creatures, reinforcing the game's focus on magical pedagogy.
