Where it came from
Basri Ket was introduced as a new planeswalker character in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2021. Designed by the Wizards of the Coast creative team, the character was conceived to represent a white-aligned warrior from the plane of Amonkhet, emphasizing themes of solidarity and military leadership. The card mechanics were specifically crafted to lean into white mana's traditional strengths, such as creating token creatures and providing board-wide buffs, filling a niche for players focused on creature-heavy strategies.
The visual design of Basri Ket was spearheaded by illustrator Aleksi Briclot. Briclot sought to establish a regal and stoic presence for the character, utilizing armor aesthetics that echo the distinct sun-drenched, Egyptian-inspired motifs of the Amonkhet setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional addition to standard play, with fans of the game noting its effectiveness in aggressive decks and its departure from the more established, long-standing planeswalker archetypes.
