Where it came from
Battle for Bretagard was released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Kaldheim, which drew heavy inspiration from Norse mythology and Viking culture. As a rare enchantment card, it depicts a pivotal moment of conflict within the set’s titular plane, specifically focusing on the defense of the world tree's realm against invading forces. It functions as a saga, a card type designed to tell a narrative over three turns by triggering sequential effects that mirror the progression of the depicted mythic event.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive, ethereal style. Voss aimed to capture the intensity and scale of the skirmish, utilizing a color palette that reflects the icy, formidable aesthetic of the Kaldheim setting. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its ability to generate multiple creature tokens, making it a functional and thematic centerpiece for decks centered around go-wide strategies.
