Where it came from
Battle for Bretagard was released as part of the Kaldheim set in early 2021, drawing heavily on Norse mythology and the frigid, high-stakes atmosphere of Viking-inspired fantasy. As a Saga enchantment, it serves as a narrative tool within the game, depicting a pivotal conflict on the plane of Kaldheim where the forces of the World Tree fought to defend the realm of Bretagard from external threats.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose work is known for its ethereal lighting and emotive character focus. The promo version, marked as 203s, features the distinct 'extended art' frame treatment common in modern Magic: The Gathering collector sets. This design choice was intended to offer a more immersive, cinematic view of the artwork, and it was generally well-received by collectors who value the integration of intricate fantasy lore with premium visual presentation.
