What it does

Provenance

Where it came from

Beast of Burden was first introduced in the Urza's Legacy set in 1999 and was later reprinted in the Seventh Edition core set in 2001. Designed as an artifact creature, it serves as a utility card that scales in power and toughness based on the number of creatures currently on the battlefield, making it a reactive tool in a player's arsenal. The card was part of a design philosophy during the late 90s that explored artifacts with variable power levels.

The artwork for the Seventh Edition printing was provided by artist Ron Spencer. Spencer, known for his distinct, expressive style during the mid-era of Magic: The Gathering, depicted the creature as a massive, labor-heavy construct burdened by its own form. The design focused on conveying a sense of immense, albeit unstable, weight to match the card's mechanical function of growing stronger alongside the complexity of the board state.
