Beast of Burden's power and toughness are each equal to the number of creatures on the battlefield.

Though it was built as an instrument of labor, it wasn't long before it became an instrument of war.

Provenance

Where it came from

Beast of Burden was first printed in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999, later appearing in the Ninth Edition core set with updated card frames. The card was designed as a rare artifact creature that scales in power and toughness based on the number of creatures currently on the battlefield, making it a situational but potentially devastating board state dependent threat.

The original illustration was created by artist Donato Giancola. Known for his technical precision and evocative fantasy compositions, Giancola’s work on this card depicts a massive, lumbering construct laden with various objects, visually reinforcing the card's mechanical identity as a creature that gains weight and force from the presence of others.
