Provenance

Where it came from

Elvish Archers first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the quintessential green mana creature. The Seventh Edition version, released in 2001, marked a significant aesthetic shift as it was the first core set to feature card frames with white borders and updated, modernized typography designed to improve readability for a burgeoning player base.

The artwork for the Seventh Edition release was provided by Anson Maddocks, one of the original illustrators for the game. Maddocks sought to refine the classic, earthy depiction of elven scouts found in earlier editions, utilizing a detailed, illustrative style that emphasized the archers' forest camouflage and sharp, focused posture to align with the game's more polished artistic direction during the early 2000s.
