Where it came from
Welcome to the Fold was released as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2016. The card was featured as a rare promo version, identified by the collector number 96s, distributed through the game's Friday Night Magic event series. Its design reflects the gothic horror aesthetic of the Innistrad plane, capturing themes of transformation and psychological dread that defined the set's narrative.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Magali Villeneuve. Known for her focus on character-driven fantasy art, Villeneuve utilized a color palette of deep violets and blues to emphasize the unsettling, otherworldly nature of the enchantment. The piece was well-regarded by the player base for its evocative depiction of the corruption central to the Innistrad storyline, cementing its place as a sought-after aesthetic piece within the promo collection.
